THE DESIGN

The role description and background history described in the submission is only a proposal and should be viewed only as such.

The ship is a battlecruiser at 460m lengthwise, slightly smaller than a Hurricane (which has a length of 490m). Its main body is also quite small, just about the size of some configurations of the Loki class. But its 'wingspan' exceeds both that of the Cyclone's and the Hurricane's length at 594m. It's mostly bilaterally symmetrical with the exception of a few details and the thruster area which is radially symmetrical at its own pivot point.

I resisted the urge to go heavy and bulky and uber like I did with the Advent. Matari ships have one quite distinctive feature: they look like they're held together only by duct tape and fervent prayers of their crew to their tribal totems. LOL I wanted to keep that aesthetic. I love the tapered lines of the Hurricane and the pointy sleekness of Vagabonds, and some of their design elements inspired the shape of this. You can also see the aesthetics of the Rupture, Scythe, Firetail, and the Cyclone in it. The entire form of the ship however, is not inspired by a dragonfly, despite looking very much like one. It's actually inspired by the Thukker tribe logo (see Dorsal View). Which, for all we know, might have been inspired by dragonflies or some sort of bird (if they exist in New Eden) in its turn *shrug*.

THE TL;DR

This was a labor of <3. It's completely unwrapped and textured; diffuse, spec, reflection, normals, the whole shebang in 4 2048x map sets. Even places you sadly will never see from the limitations of the submission rules. No tiling textures, minimal reliance on actual geometry to flesh out details. Each individual window, each tiny little panel underneath the armor is painstakingly hand made. No overpainting, except for the thruster glow, it's all textures. Not the slapdash 'make generic details and fit faces over them' kind of textures either, but unwrapped with unique UV's (except where it's mirrored, of course). Not an easy task as this being quite skeletal, it has far more non-contiguous surface area than my first entry.

Like the Advent, this is somewhat a meld between the game-art 'optimize everything' discipline and devil-may-care edgeloop high poly modeling approach. I didn't rely too much on actual geometry and chose to detail parts in texture, mostly because I can't render much of anything past the 1 million poly mark, LOL. Texture, sadly, can't be shown in the orthos according to the rules. It does have the advantage though of having far simpler geometry (and thus easier to follow) while still maintaining the illusion of greater detail in its final form. Pretty much like how game engines actually do it anyway. :P I also detailed with function in mind. Not complexity for the sake of complexity. See comparison pictures linked above.

Total creation time, along with my other submission, the Amarrian Advent Battleship (and including concepting, modeling, unwrapping, texturing, creating the art and write-ups for the submission forms, interruptions, googling close-up references of existing ships, breaks, hours of staring at the screen wondering if I should make it like this or like that or if it was all worth it, two other ships started and abandoned along the way, redoing things and redoing them again, and that annoying thing called real life) is about three weeks.

Higher resolution orthos and other views are available if requested. Please check out my other entry as well - the Advent ([link]). Although I like this entry a whole lot better than that one. :3

DISCLAIMERS

EVE and DA logos, faction logos and some descriptions and fiction background are EVE and DeviantArt IP respectively, and are used as expressly permitted by the rules for this contest alone. No stock photos are used, and whatever base textures used here are appropriately licensed. Also please note that the background is NOT a screenshot from EVE or anywhere else. Everything including stars, the 3d overlay (deliberately made to resemble the EVE tactical view UI), the tiny techy text and linework (which are handmade and NOT brushes, feel free to actually read them), etc. are my work and made solely for this contest. Even the faction logos and 'HUD' icons used are my own work based on the designs. The only things used pretty much 'as is' in here are the EVE and DA logos. No other graphical elements of EVE or DA is used.

No kittuns were harmed in the making of this starship.

Good luck to everyone!

although i do need to protest your classification of this ship... to me it looks more like a cruiser rather than a BC and reading your text up there ( small print man) you seem to be putting emphisis on stealth... cruiser. could you give me some stats liek length, height, width and crew capacity.

You're welcome.

I'm wondering if the various logos got yours rejected by DA prematurely. The logos are all in game EVE logos for Thukker Tribe, Republic Fleet and Minmatar Republic, but DA judges might not of known that :(.

I know. :[ I've seen several other awesome entries with the same problem. Especially Caldari and Gallente submissions, whose corporate logos resemble real world ones.

Apparently though, it's not disqualified, since I got the time code just today. But at this point, I'm betting everyone got the code as well. It's damage control, and I wouldn't trust it as an indication that the judges did not disqualify it the first time they saw it, especially since they probably gave 90% of the entries little more than a cursory glance (only logical reason why it all ended up like this, to be honest).

Yeah I bet they giving it to everyone, I agree I think their unfamiliarity with in game logos may have doomed many of the fine submissions we had.

CCP and DA probably giving codes to all as PR move now which isn't bad.

Not sad, just... angry I guess. A lot of the entrants worked very hard for this contest, and the judges apparently didn't even take it that seriously. I'm not even one of the possible top 15's, but it's insulting just how carelessly they picked the original winners (they replaced one of the most glaring evidences of their incompetence earlier). It's like they're saying we really shouldn't have bothered doing any real work on our entries because they'll just use a random number generator to get the finalists anyway.

Anyway, thank you. :D

You can put it "as is" in EVE — it fit like glove. It could be t2 logistic ship (if not battlecruiser). No one will miss older model.

Heh ;P this were the rules:

The six views should be clean, uncolored line drawings / illustrations / schematics of the exterior hull of the starship. Entrant may include a fully shaded / colored view (a seventh view) of the starship in the entry as well.

It is very vague on the shading part. In fact the rules say nothing about not shading the orthos. All it says is clean and uncolored and it didn't even require line drawings. I stuck to that. I purposely didn't shade it fully (notice how the shadows on the orthos are bandy, it's to show off rounded shapes which otherwise can not ever be shown by lines alone).

TalentlessBoy was a witness to us asking questions regarding these. And receiving answers that were vague but hinted that shading was allowed as long as it was understandable to modelers. As well as assure us that names on the entries were alright (and now they remove the LA BC from the semis for the reason that it had the artist's name on it).

On this screenshot: [link]
And on this page: [link]

Anyway, don't care anymore. ;P Thanks anyway.

The only way this ship could have not made it into the finalists is if a) the judges didn't see it in their hasty thumb through the entries or b) they're monkeys. This ship rules.

Probably more like c) disqualified, despite the fact that I have been asking for clarifications of the rules from the moment I entered the contest.

Thanks for the thought :) Given the number of entries it's kinda understandable if they simply missed this tho. But how they could have missed the dozens of others isn't so clear.

Anyway, water under the bridge. I'm still proud of my ship and it was a nice experience all in all. As podpilots say, GF! ;)

Very professional-looking work (and professional presentation!).

I doubt other EVE designs take it into account, but if the main engines aren't pointed at the center of mass, they're going to spin the ship in a weightless environment.

Thank you. :) And yep real physics pretty much doesn't matter in EVE heh. There are also far weirder engine placements in EVE especially on the asymmetrical designs (and especially for ships of this faction). In real life, this ship (and majority of the ships in game) would probably fall apart the minute the thrusters fire up anyway. Momentum puts stress on parts away from the center of impulse until they break off, constantly firing engines without apparent acceleration (and not shutting off once desired velocity is achieved), incongruously small engines for massive ships, no retrorockets, etc. etc. But then again, if scifi followed real science too much, we'd end up with spherical balls of metal for all ship designs, studded with thrusters for omnidirectional navigation. ;) Not very visually appealing, heh.

Yeah, it's too bad that real space combat wouldn't be dogfights and stuff. Still, I don't think the platonic ideal spaceship would be a sphere, since it's easier to use one main drive -- though, at the same time, the longer the ship gets the more effort it would take to add or detract from its angular momentum along the long axes.

You can always explain EVE's designs away with, say, inertial fields or some other magic future tech. As long as it's all fun to look at and play!

:iconastepintooblivion:
AStepIntoOblivion Featured By Owner Oct 12, 2010
Haha yep. Future magic tech ftw! :D

Probably not spheres if fuel was a factor, but still ideally very squat and covered with thrusters both for propulsion and changing direction if even a modicum of short range maneuverability is expected of it. Plus, real space combat would probably happen from thousands of kilometers away anyway. You wouldn't even need to see the enemies. Just know their paths. Since the weapons, once given the initial velocity, would go on forever theoretically, and changing directions, stopping, and turning could be quite difficult. More like a math game of trying to hit a precise shot by calculating trajectories. Or jousting rather than dogfights or moving billiards balls with slingshots trying to hit each other in a 3d pool table of infinite dimensions. :D

Yar. Well, even more like skeet-shooting IN SPACE. A cloud of ball bearings moving very fast would make easy work of a ship across a good range of likely paths.

It's an interesting design and well-executed, but I tend to agree that it looks too fragile. And all that surface area means plenty of surface to catch enemy fire.

Heh thanks. :) Doesn't really matter in EVE, as the ships themselves are protected by shields. There are even larger ships than this one with even more fragile looking components. Like the battleships of the faction this ship was for, which sport solar sails far larger with the same flimsy looking attachments. There are also several ships ingame of the same faction that look just as fragile as this and are about the same size, the Stabber, Bellicose, and Scythe classes. And if there's one thing the Minmatar are known for in EVE, its for their ships that look like engines with pieces of junk welded to it haphazardly. XD
